Anything related to LHC@Home.

LHC@Home Homepage

Description:
Since 2004, LHC@home has been distributing the programme Sixtrack which supports accelerator physicists simulating the proton beam stability of the future Large Hadron Collider (LHC). As of autumn 2006, there are plans to distribute a second software package, Garfield, which does simulations of gases in high fields, to simulate the behaviour of particle detectors used at the LHC.

I have to say the challenge of getting work units from this project, when they have them available, is fun... I haven't decided whether you need to be really, really laid back or obsessive cumpulsive, but then either one would work, lol... even Peanut has managed to download a couple of units :smt023

Calm Chaos is at possie #999 now... :smt026

We left 'Beings of Impure Thought' way behind, I didn't even notice passing them... Bird-Dog, Snowtiggeress, anyone... want to pick a team to chase? 'DeepThought' currently at #894 looks good...

As the wu`s are sporadic its a bonus to get some never mind overtaking anyone, still every teams in the same boat. I noticed we are about 3 places behind Argentina and as a Brit its always a pleasure to kick their butt at every opertunity. I might have enough left to do it myself if no one else has any left. I check the LHC homepage every couple of days and sometimes get lucky so I can allow work.

I figured with all the teams in the same boat it was worth the suggestion :smt003

Okay then, the Argentinians sound good to me... Boincstats would choose right now to go down... I'm all out of units, so we'll see how far your remaining units take us... if not, then we'll get them with the next release of work units... maybe, lol.

:smt026 Which team next? :smt026

"The Cult of the Dead Electron" currently at 801? or (kick me as I change the page) "The Unlikely Consortium" currently at 793? Someone else?

Okay, sounds good... United Kingdom at 807 is next on our list, lol. Then we'll take a little detour past The Unlikely Consortium on our trek to pastures beyond Team England... that last one will be tough, but I'm feeling lucky :smt003

[smilie=drogar-shock(dbg).gif] We are only 77 credits behind Team England at BoincStats [smilie=drogar-shock(dbg).gif]

On LHC site TE have 6135 and CC have 6153 credits!

Need to start looking for next goal. I was sure we would have a week or two, lol...

I had a plan of attack, a system. When there was lots of work I would work for a full quota on the computers and I enjoyed the challenge. These long units have thrown me. I can't get a full quota, Boinc goes into a tizzy. A full quota on the laptop would take 5 days to complete! It's left me with nothing to do but watch, lol. Oh, keep them coming!

Yeah it kinda surprised me to see LHC wu's in my list. These are unusually long, 5 hours on my new machine and 10 hours on the others.

I got the quota of ten, I think for the first time, they are usually gone before I even get 4 or 6. I would imagine we`ll be waiting with pending wu`s though because of the size and the credit whores filling there cache to max day after day regardless of getting them finished or not. Should go up a bit in the rankings with what we`ve got. I think I`ve found a target, maybe, we`ve seen off England so what about Scotland at 596 with 8516 credits. :smt036

They're taking my laptop 12+ hours! I did manage to download 6. #1 son's computer managed 22, which are taking around 6 hours. The office P4 left to itself managed 2, lol.

Yeah, we'll be waiting for credits, but depends how much they could get onto their machines. I didn't realise how long they were until Boinc started trying to tell me I wouldn't finish in time, lol.

Oooo, Scotland at 596 sounds good... let's take them :smt003

[smilie=drink.gif] So long bonnie Scotland, so long!!! [smilie=drink.gif]

We've flown into position #533, with Scotland 40 places behind us.

Shall wait until all units are back before looking for next target :smt003 so more drinks!

For a really good book soon to be a movie check out Angels and Demons by Dan Brown the same guy the wrote the Da Vinci Code...it deals directly with CERN and the Catholic Church...and of course the Illuminati...very interesting idea for a book and better then the Da Vinci Code IMHO.

04 Mar 2010:

Two announcements:
1) The LHC is back up and running you can follow its progress on the
CERN twitter feed @CERN or
the @lhcstatus feed.
The latter is actually a scrape of the screens that the physicists watch
to monitor the LHC machine.
2) LHC@home is also back. After a long quiet period we have new
studies to work on. The executable has been updated (which is why there
is not a Linux version available yet) and the project is now crunching
simulations for the LHC upgrade. The team at CERN are working on the
Linux executable and the team at QMUL are looking at the server code and
are hoping to update that soon.
This is all I will say for the moment. However LHC@home is being
used for beam studies from the LHC machine running actual data from the
experiments is unlikely as the code has been written for the grid and
the datasets are measured in 100s of gigabytes. We
have been looking into other LHC uses for the project but it is not
easy.
Later days,
Neasan

Just found out something about LHC. If you want your stats exported from LHC to any of the stats sites, you now have to back into your account and accept the cookie data thing. Once you do that they will be exported again. You know with all the new consent law things and what not. So just a FYI if those stats are missing from the stats sites.

Just making this easy for folks. Go to your account page, scroll down to preferences and click on Preferences for this project - LHC@home preferences
Then edit preferences and check the box. :smt023
