13 Jun 2009 AEST:

Although I've got some mirror offers the project still needs more resources, so I had to lower the work unit limit from 25 to 5 (!) until I can be sure that the server can handle a higher limit...

Anyone have an idea what is up with FreeHal. It seems that a bunch of people have lost their accounts or something. My account seems to have gone walking, no longer listed in the team (although the top team page says there are no teams), and is no longer listed in my BoincStats sig.

At the moment it looks like I lost 35k worth of work...

Looks like it is all back up and running. My account has reappeared over at FreeHal. Now just have to wait for it to come back at BoincStats...

And I have managed to pull down 40 units and have them all crunching at the same time. Along with two Spinhenge units. There is still a message about a limit of 5, but maybe that is out of date. My unit limit is set to 20, so I have pulled done twice the number.

Re: FreeHAL Project

Post by Gavin Shaw » Sun Jan 24, 2010 1:20 pm

Well I just had Freehal decide it wanted to potentially be banned for life on my machines.

Currently the work limit is 25 units at a time and I have set mine to 20. So my computer should never have more than 20 units running at a time, right?

Well tonight when I go to use my system it is very slow to get to the desktop (it has been on and running all day while I did other stuff). Finally I discover that the CPU is not being used, so what happened to my WCG units? And then I discover that the IO activity is maxed out and my memory use has gone to 99%. So digging into Boinc I discover that my system is trying to run 125 (yes that is correct) FreeHal units at the same time!

Suspending the project makes no difference and suspending Boinc makes no difference. FreeHal continues to run as is it uses 0 CPU. But it jams my IO off the chart and memory use and swap shoot up.

In the end I had to boot into safe mode with command prompt and delete all of the workunits. Then reboot normally and stop it from downloading them again and then I decided to reset the project.

This is not how Boinc and Boinc projects are supposed to run. They are to use resources that are not being utilised and then when I want them they are to give them to me. FreeHal basically made my computer unusable, I could not even Ctrl+Alt+Del. I had to do a hard shutdown through the power switch. It basically took over all the resources. I do not know how it can even issue 125 workunits to me.

At least now my computer is running 2 WCG units and I am able to use it to write this vent. I was and still am seriously pissed off with FreeHal.

Yeah, but you need the memory. Each FreeHal units uses up to 30MB of memory. So that 3,750MB for the 125 units. And I only have 2GB installed and the OS is only 32bit so even allowing for swap it pretty much takes the full 4GB possible. And doesn't leave room for anything else...

Wow. LOL. Thats an odd one. Wondering if that started happening around the time they went down, or when they were starting to release them again after being down.

All my systems seemed to have taking it all in stride.

Other than that problem of yours I haven't seen much of a problem with FreeHal as of late.

Only if you have the memory and do not want to use your computer for anything. Lol...

I just checked the FreeHal site and I still have 125 units assigned to me. I guess the reset didn't tell the server that I no longer have them. I had to manually delete the files. Couldn't get in and abort them one by one...

Yes, Seems they are having a problem in the last several hours with the new WU's. No thing posted at FreeHal yet about it, other than people seeing the problem.

Just so you know. FreeHal according to Tobias has been under a DoS attack, so thats why it has been in and out. Id just let it run and once its back up Boinc will get it going again.

Ive had a small run of wu's during this time that error out as soon as they start. But then it was down again. Hopefully they will get it worked out soon.

DoS Attack ?! That's just wrong.... This is one of those times when a couple of crews of white hats would be useful. And have a little fun at the same time.... Seriously, This is just wrong, plain and simple.

Serious question- is it known if this is isolated to the project's resources- or has the host system been targetted as well? Or is this an attack on the host system FH just happens to be part of?

If they are under DoS attack this wouldn't be the first time. This is the second or third time it has happened. Makes you wonder what is going on?

Im not sure if there still on a shared hosting or not. I know a long while back it was on shared hosting. But now Im not sure. Yeah they have had several before. Just people with to much time on there hands and nothing better to do than cause a problem.

Yeah, they are still having some slight problems. Some systems seem to be running them fine, other systems not. Even weirder (if that is even a word) Have 2 almost identical systems. Same MB, Ram, etc. Only thing really different are the hd and the gpus. One running fine, other not. Has me a little perplexed. But it doesn't take to much to do that to me. LOL

I have released a new application version 1.30 except for linux 64 bit because of a compilation problem. It should be available

I was running 20 so as to try and keep my computer responsive for other tasks (I found 25 seemed to prevent from doing other non-Boinc tasks).

22 May 2010:

Since the Pentathlon several users complained about the fact that reported results are not shown in the web interface.
I have to ensure that the SQL database doesn't grow too much (everything would be too slow then),
so the validator-assimilator (it's one daemon at Freehal instead of two to be faster)
validates the results during a few seconds after uploading. So you probably won't see successful results.
It also seems that for some users only the 'user' and 'team' credits have been updated when results are validated, and not the 'host' entry.
I hope this bug is fixed now, please report it in the forum if you have problems.

I do not know yet where the latest tons of credit some users got come from.
Now I stopped the stats export and I'm going to reset the credits to the values they had some days before.
Anyway, all hosts and users have a per-day limit of 5000 and 50000 credits from now on. This also makes several manipulation techniques
in some team forums senseless. We can also make a new voting for this limit if you think it is too high or too low. But there will
definitely be a per-user limit.
