FreeHAL Project

Post by motionSymmetry » Mon Dec 08, 2008 10:24 pm

probly not supposed to do this but i can't remember where we were (variously) talking about freeHAL, so ...

just a coupla notes: one, after tobias did some obvious work on freehal (no wu's), i started getting over 100% running on one, actually got over %200 before i noticed

got a nice message in the messages tab on boinc manager saying to reset, so i did

now even better news: i've got *two* freehals running!

that's *four* apps running on my C2D

i'm hoping tobias and company have figured out how to do background running on multicores ... :smt023

nothing on the boinc boards (nor on the freehal boards, but i think they don't really use them anymore)

is anybody else having these problems? first yoyo and now this

After a reset you always seem to download multiple wu`s, the most I think I had at once was 9 and they do use a lot of memory. For about a week now all I get is download errors even after detach/re-attach, re-set-after re-set, nothing. I have it on NNT, have givan up with it :smt019

update

restarted freehal, it's version alpha 18 now. tho i did have two running at the same time initially, they both completed, got credit, and now it looks like it's back to one "background" wu again

the only thing that worries me is the app looks to be communicating with its site constantly. i suspend it and the blinking stops; resume it and the blinking starts

i'm gonna leave it running for now

ps: upgraded to 6.4.x boinc, so far so good. if things look good tomorrow i will try to restart yoyo

until then, looking to overclock the fsb :smt023

final update

can't figure why the net comm continues, but can tell it slows down every other net comm i do - itunes, firefox, etc

doesn't appear to be malicious as far as i know but it's gone for now ...

WOW, this is weird. I had to read what has happened before with this project as I just attached last night and got my first 2 wu about 15 minutes ago. They are both running, and have not stopped primegrip from running, so with freehal I now have 3 wu running simultaneously on a single core Athlon 64!

I'll be interested to see what credits, if any, I get once these have finished :)

mmm, just to make me look less stupid - the "netcomm" i was talking about is just freehal downloading the wiki pages it uses to train

i still haven't re-signed to it tho, because the fact that it gives you two more crunching wu's doesn't keep it from using more resources - even just opening windows i got lag

that was the 24 version i was last hooked up to. if you don't experience the desktop slowdown please post that here. i think it's a good project, and tobias is very responsive, but i just can't afford not to be doing other work on this thing, so it needs to play nicer with other programs, especially system progs, before i commit to trying it again

So far, these are both up to about 115%, a PG wi completed successfully and uneventfully, and MW is happily crunching alongside the 2 freehal wu.

If anything, I would say that Windows is abnormally stable at the moment (but then again I am still getting used to using XP64, always had 32-bit windows installed until recently). The freehal work doesn't seem to ahve affected anything else on the system so far :) Not sure if it will hog memory over time though...

hmm. Seems that the wu take about 30 mnutes each ehre, although report as taking 2 seconds each. Giving 6 points each on top of not affecting whatever other wu is running, I might even check out how much they can do on the C2D when I am home again later :)

Well, OK, I couldn't wait. Got 3 freehal wu going alongside an ABC and a PG on the C2D. Wonder how many wu it'll give me when these upload (the Athlon 64 is only getting one at a time after the first pair uploaded).

It's not letting me see yoru results, but I am finding the faster computer I ahve attached is getting 0 results with completion times below 1 minute. The slower Athlon 64 is giving 6 credits for approx 2 seconds per wu.

I posted on their forums regarding the sub-1 second wu giving validation errors and zero credits, and am waiting for a reply :)

I posted earlier about all the results which have a CPU time below one second also being the same as those which have validate errors. They fixed something as a result of my forum post, and now all work I do is getting me 6 points, for 30 seconds background work per system (ie not per core, and not takiong over the machine, but 30 seconds background work, regardless of processor or other work being done).

I consider it 288 free credits (approx) per day for each system I run it on if it stays working :)

LOL, yeah - I've been a member there for 2 weeks and have got just over 5,500 credits for doing nothing (except occasionally monitor the system and reset the project when they had a lot of falied downloads recently).

?

Why? It let's other others continue to run as before, with llittle power drawn away; i.e., on a duo, 2 other WUs continue to crunch, in about the same time as before. This way, a 3rd also gets done. So what if they don't always have work to supply you?

I think Chris is worried about the current problem uploading results.

Don't worry Chris, once that problem is sorted (I guess it'll be tomorrow now...) any work you are trying to upload will get uploaded and you will get more work (and credits). The amount of CPU time this project uses for the credits it gives, it is worth the extra maintenance it sometimes needs, as it barely affect what credit you get elsewhere while also giving very respectable credits (6 per wu, for a second or two of CPU time spread over maybe half an hour clock time).

Yeah, they had been having trouble with uploads for over 12 hours (was it a full day?) before they decided to give us that message. It makes no difference anyway to some clients. I think it is a minority that are able to upload an occassional result after a rest.

I had 2 resets on one client before they started uploading. Waiting to see what the C2D does with work obtained after the second reset. Not gonna crawl behind the desk to connect up the monitor to the Clawhammer system to see what will happen there, it's too much hassle.

Hi Debs!

I have 9 machines at various remote locations and likely to lose a shed load of work over this. I left a message at FH saying that I accept alpha project technical hitches, but bad management is another thing.....

I hear you. They ahve been having problems for long enough now to annoy me. 24 hours is plenty long enough for the site admins to respond to user concerns. They could certainly lerarn a thing or three from MW about that :)

Okay. I just started up at FreeHal.

When I woke up this morning I discovered my laptop was crunching 2 Milkway units and about 8 FreeHal units all at the same time. And Milkyway seemed to be going as though there wasn't anything else running.

So Freehal hardly uses the CPU?

Of course I am stuck trying to get them to upload. Something about too many uploads and a supermarket queue...

Well the limit is 5 units per core. So I only have 10. But then there are probably quite a few out there like me with single or dual cores so we are all in the express lane...
