Is anyone else having trouble uploading work to SETI??

I am getting to the point where I am about to just give it up and go back to MW and Prime Grid on my machines. :smt021

Yep, it's been going on for at least a day now. I must have 70 or 80 WUs trying to upload.

And I suspended SETI yesterday and went back to MW. When the uploads clear, I'll resume SETI.

They have been up and down for about a week now. I have enough units to get through to the morning here.

After that if they are not back up and serving work (and receiving results), then I'll be getting some from either Rosetta or MW.

And I think my uni desktop will be out of units by the time I get into uni tomorrow morning so it will need some units fast.

Had a thought for everyone.

What if we were to take the 3 projects that didn't make it from the previous vote. And let them stay in for the following months vote. Adding in 1 new one a month.

Then if a project is still sitting in there after 2 or 3 votings we could drop it out for another.

Just having thoughts on how to make it easier for doing the picks so we can get them up quicker for voting. Also since at least half are in and out most times. Can go through alot of those quickly if picking all new ones every month.

Thoughts?

rotation of some sort *would* ensure that every project gets a shot. and then have the new slot (or two) for recommendations for "hot" projects

Tell me if I am saying the same thing here. Even if I'm not, it should be a similar idea to give some thought.

If the winner for the POTM is having difficulties sending out new WUs for a significant time during the month we're throwing heavy resources at it, we have a ranking of three other backup projects. So, with S@H the winner this month, with server difficulties, throw more resources at the runner-up for the time being while server issues are being resolved.

OK here's my idea.

Like the voting for September,

ABC - 9
Enigma - 3
Poem - 0
Yo-Yo - 0

Example above of ending vote. ABC gets pick for POTM. Then the next months voting (October) would get the 3 that didn't make it.

Enigma
Poem
Yo-Yo

Then we just have to add one to it for October.

Also, Like ABC was picked for September, but started having server problems or something. We slide to the project with the next amount of votes. In this case Enigma.

Like I said , just ideas. Something to make it easier to put up the vote, along with better reliable projects. When we change them all every month, can get hard finding good, reliable ones.

That sounds like a good idea to me; but I'm wondering about what happens if Poem & Yo-Yo *never* get picked -- do you load the list with two guaranteed sucky projects to force a choice to Poem or Yo-Yo?

I have another thought on how to not have to think so hard about this (gotta free up brain cells every where we can!!) if you're interested.

Yeah for projects that stay for 3 rounds and not get picked, would drop for new ones.

Whats your Idea?

I was just wondering if a "randomizer" might do the trick -- something like the Magic 8 ball, only a little smarter. Wouldn't take much: a tiny dbase table (or xml or csv or other) and some php. Hardest part would be determining what criteria to use . . .

hmmmm . . .

thinking . . .

Lot's of different ways to approach it with regard to making sure that projects that are definitely "no go" are never spit out but the end goal is this:

1. Launch Project Randomizer Page
2. Click Button
3. Copy returned POTM name for pasting wherever you like

Could as easily also return a suggestion for alternate.

Oh. And the coolest part is that Wyrme would be happy to write it if you like so it won't add to your pile-o-stuff to do.

OOOH!!! AND we could call it "The Reaper" :smt003

Damn. I like the way you think Wyrme....lol

That system, if it's not too hard to set up, would be a great idea I think.

And, on a related note, though a bit off-topic, it's easy to randomize the selection of the MOTW. (I just bring it up due to the recent requests and how randomness is related to this discussion)

The member of the week is already random. Buga has a php something or other set up that randomly selects someone and takes people out once they are chosen.

Beat this up and let me know if you run into any bugs.

The Reaper [beta]

Also let me know if you see any errors in the data returned.

disclaimers:
1. The database only includes BOINC projects as of this writing. The others will be populated as soon as I learn of a good source.
2. All of the projects in the database are currently flagged "Active". This too will change over the next few days (the logic is in place, I just need to find the best source for the info so I can go de-activate them).

Okay, looking good.

I had a play. In the options I set it to linux, mac and windows. So does that mean only projects that support those O/S's should be selected? If so then you have a bug. I select those O/S's and 'all' for the include POTM option and I can get Rectilinear Crossing Number which according to the information only supports Windows.

Can you check up on this. Maybe I misunderstand the options.

But good work and effort so far.

Thanks for that input Gavin -- just what the doctor ordered.

Right now, it is returning records which match *any* of the selected platforms.

I had been waffling on whether or not to add a set of AND/OR radio buttons but held back so that I can get input. With your feedback, I'm leaning toward putting the radio buttons in place now :)

My thinking is that the user probably needs to be able to choose whether they want to display only those which meet *all* platform selections, or display those which meet *any*.

. . . hrm . . . I'm a bit brain fried this evening so that may not make sense, but hopefully you get where I'm headed.

It would probably be good to have a AND/OR type option(s). Especially since we have crunchers here that use Linux as well as some that use Mac.

This way we can avoid excluding them on POTM.

Nice.
A minor thing.
After clicking to see another project, the "click me" does not always show up in the same place. It'd be cool if it was always located in the same spot. Not required, of course.

I kinda noticed that as well....but...what else would be the " Chaos " part??? lmao

So far....it looks like we will have something very cool to play with. :-)

I am pleased that folks are liking it so far :) Thank you.

@Sarge & KM: Yeah, drives me nuts too.

I think the simplest thing to do is simply move the link to the topmost portion of the box -- it will then always remain there regardless of the length of the data.

Oh, and, I *hate* the "Click Me" label but am struggling with creative block (not to mention a failed attempt at a Rob Zombie reference -- blasted thing just flops on its face) -- any suggestions on a catchy label? My standards (Submit, Send, etc.) just seem too serious for this project.

Agreed. I believe I will wander off and "make it so" over the next couple of days.

I'll also be adding the and/or radios so that the platform filtering is more comprehensive.

OK, we are looking at changing all the choices for next months picks. Any ideas. I would just pick 4 new ones, but giving it a day or so for suggestions.

Couple things. Would prefer projects that haven't been POTM for the last 6 months or the current LTP. Projects that offer a wider array of applications (Windows,Linux,Mac etc.) Doesn't have to, but the more the better. Active. (can check out stats site to see if the project has been running well)

Cosmo might finally be ready to be POTM. It is not running perfect right now but the admins are much more active now than they were this summer.

WUs seem to be plentiful, I have seen a few times that there weren't any, but that seemed to be quickly resolved.

The biggest problem is a download issue. Random WUs do not download and will then stop all further downloads until the failing one is aborted.

But, Cosmo WUs are long, 2.5 - 3.5 hours on my quads, 6 - 9 hours on my C2D. Once you get a couple of WUs downloaded, you only need to look at it every day or so to make sure that a download isn't stuck.

You can read more about the issue in a long winded bitch session thread here :smt021

Or a shorter, much more to the point, trying to be helpful thread here :smt038
